Jared is totally right about the size of the jumps. Too small for a World Cup 4X event.
-
Why are the jumps so small in the first place? A couple of reasons…
-
The hillside is very steep and very short. Difficult to build a decent length of track. In this instance if you build long straights suitable to build big jumps, you have make space by cutting out 1 or 2 straights and 2 or 4 corners. Corners make for good passing opportunities – less corners equals less passing opportunities. With a small hill, this forces the track builder to make a decision between more passing OR bigger jumps. You can’t have both and whichever is left out will be complained about.
-
As the track was designed to be a permanent track for public, unsupervised use, it couldn’t be too “extreme” so I went for more corners and smaller jumps.
-
This problem was identified after the first test event before this became a WC event. I made proposals to extend the track by 200m at the top, giving 2 more corners and 2 more straights. This would allow us enough space to extend the “big jump” straight and at least double the length of the biggest jumps, without compromising on passing opportunities in the corners.
-
This proposal was rejected by the town planning authorities for the past 2 years. In fact they have prevented ANY changes to the track since 2007.
-
Big jumps or more passing? Unless you have limitless space and time to build the track and create both, it is the big question.
-
In my opinion, this track has tiny jumps, but this should be made up for by the amount of passing opportunities in the corners.

Let’s see tonight during racing.
